 Paul Mockapetris expanded the Internet by inventing the Domain Name System (DNS) in 1983.

Our computer system does not understand any languages. It works and understands only binary languages, i.e. 0s and 1s.

The website we use in our daily routine life is not letters.

They are numbers. For example, www.chtips.com is a domain name, but the computer system does not understand and access this website by its name.

Firstly, it converts the website’s name into “IP Address” numbers.

The point should be considered that every website on the Internet has a different and unique IP address.

This system helps us avoid memorizing complete and complicated numbers of any website users have to type the domain name and access the information on the website.

What is DNS {Domain Name System} in Computer Network?

DNS stands for Domain Name System.

In simple words, DNS is a system that converts the domain name into an IP address because web browsers or networks do not understand any other languages.

For Example
www.chtips.com is the website's name, but the IP address is 172.67.142.38.

It is tedious and challenging to mesmerize such an IP address.

If any DNS server cannot translate any domain name, it shifts the process to another DNS server.

This process is continued until and unless the domain is solved, which is a must process to access and work with any website.

The domain name system consists domain name server, which is pre-installed in the system.

The domain name server collects data and information from several websites around.

The primary objective of a domain name server is to collect information about websites like their domain name and IP address.

This information is stored in the server for further use and for accessing information present on the website,

There are numerous domain name servers {DNS} present worldwide that have stored millions and millions of information on websites around the Internet.

All servers are connected if any server cannot provide any website information. It looks for the details on the other DNS server, and the process goes on till the record is found; otherwise, the error is thrown on a web browser.

DNS is a standard set of protocols responsible for data exchange of Internet and private networks.

Which is also known as TCP/IP.

The URL of the website looks like this https://www.chtips.com, but at the back end, it is assigned a unique IP address.

  • The DNS Server and System allow websites to connect to the domain name system more rapidly. Hence, it produces a fast internet connection to perform and access the websites for data and information.
  • The computer system does not understand any languages. The DNS server and system allow websites and online applications to connect to the server for data access and exchange.
  • The DNS system helps in providing security features for the users.
  • The domain name server and the system convert a domain name to the IP address for accessible communication and connections.
  • They are very efficient systems in the computer network and internet industry.
  • The domain name is assigned with IP address {Internet Protocol} this IP is complicated to recognize and remember thanks to the DNS system, which translates these IP addresses to the domain name, which is more convenient and easy to remember.
  • The Host IP changes can map a new IP address if, in any case, the domain name is changed.
  • The DNS system is very flexible and consistent.
  • They are easy to use and configure.

Drawbacks and Disadvantages of DNS {Domain Name System}

  • These DNS {Domain Name System} are managed by a nonprofit organization called “ICANN“. This is considered as 
  • Hackers and spammers can hack DNS Servers. It has been observed that DNS servers are attacked numerous times.
  • The servers are built on the master-slave relationship, and hence if the master or central server breaks down, the entire system slows or even stops responding. This eventually prevents the website and application from loading on the browser.
  • They are hard to maintain as if any issue or bug arises in the system, we have to seek professional advice, which may be costlier at times.
  • The IP address of any application or website can be easily manipulated and compromised by unauthorized users. That may cause data and information violation and misuse.
  • The issues that are hard to troubleshoot and diagnose, are related to DNS.
