Is a Monitor Input or Output Device of Computer System

The computer monitor is an output device of the computer system. It is considered one of the most popular output devices used and utilized extensively.

The monitors are devices that are easily attached to a computer system to view images, text, and videos. They are electronic devices also called “Visual Display Unit”.

In this article we will find Is a Monitor Input or Output Device?

What is Computer Monitor?

The computer monitor was invented in 1897 by German physicist Ferdinand Braun and named "Braun Tube".

The monitors are very similar to the old television set.

These monitors are far more advanced technology compared to TV as they have evolved with more advanced designs.

The computer monitors present high display resolutions and refresh rates, enhancing and providing more explicit pictures and videos.

Due to its high resolution, it can present more advanced quality compared to televisions. The monitor is also known as VDU {Visual Display Unit}.

They look like Televisions and are pretty huge.

The Monitors have CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) used to display the screen’s information.

CRT Contains an electron gun, an electronic beam controlled by an electromagnetic field, and a display screen.

The uses of CRT monitors were in their prime because they were the latest and updated technology of their time.

Pictures on the computer screen are shaped with picture components called PIXEL.

The screen is covered with phosphor in a framework of dots.

The electronic gun radiates an electron pillar, which is coordinated towards the phosphor-covered display by an electromagnetic field and, in this way, makes a picture on the screen.

Computer monitors can be dark and white (Monochrome). The utilization of monochrome does not exist these days as they are outdated and out of fashion.

The QUALITY of the monitors depends enormously on the resolutions of computer screens.

Different Types of Monitors

Types of Monitors
Types of Monitors
  • CRT [Cathode Ray Tube]
  • LCD [Liquid Crystal Display]
  • LED [Light Emitting Diode]
  • Plasma Display Panel
  • TFT [Thin Film Television]
  • DLP [Digital Light Processing]
  • Touch Screen Monitor
  • OLED [Organic Light-Emitting Diode]

Is a Monitor Input or Output Device

The computer monitor is an output device of a computer system responsible for presenting or displaying output on the screen.

The monitor is the primary and most used and utilized output device.

Following is the list of the output devices of the computer system.
  • Monitors
  • Touch Screens
  • LCD Monitors or LED Monitors
  • Printers
  • Speakers
  • Headphones
  • Sound Cards
  • Plotters
  • Projectors

Advantages of CRT Monitors

  • They are inexpensive compared to other monitors like LCD and LED.
  • These CRT monitors are very responsive.
  • They respond faster and quicker.
  • Their average time interaction is less than 1 picosecond.
  • CRT monitors do not have native display resolution.
  • CRT monitors picture quality is excellent when used in any given resolution.
  • They usually produce a dark black and heavy contrast level, suitable for viewing in a dark environment.

Advantages of LCD Monitors

  • LCD Monitors are very thin in shape and size.
  • They do not consume much electricity and emit less heat.
  • They are preferred over CRT monitors because of their size as they can be installed in small locations.
  • They do not affect any magnetic fields.
  • These monitors are used in graphics design and creating animation videos due to their high picture quality and better resolutions (1080p).
  • LCD uses millions and millions of small transistors controlled by the system inside the display. This indicates that they can handle progressive scan sources like progressive-scan DVDs and HDTVs.
  • LCD monitors have unique shapes and sizes and are very popular, especially curved monitors.
  • LCD monitors have very sharp brightness, which is helpful in a black working environment.
  • They also possess image-perfect sharpness for better visibility and clarity.
  • They are readily available in the market compared to OLED.
  • Best in resolutions, color depth, refresh rate, etc.
  • Very low power compared to CRT or Plasma.
  • Zero geometric distortion at the native resolution of the panel. Minor distortion for other resolutions because the images must be rescaled.

5 Uses of Monitors

The monitors are used to view documents, images, text, and characters on the screen, customarily called “VDU” which stands for “Visual Display Unit”.

Below I have listed some of the everyday tasks and uses of a computer monitor
  • Computer monitors are used in viewing the input and output of applications software’s results.
  • They are also used in web browsing and web surfing.
  • The monitors are used in gaming.
  • They are used in accounting.
  • Used in data entry and computer programming
