#1. First (1st) Generation Computer.

The first generation computers used vacuum tubes in their hardware and magnetic drum used in the memory. They were huge and needed big rooms for accommodation and installation.

They produced lots of heat and energy, and hence due to the heat, the hardware component used to get damaged or sometimes burn. 

Therefore, installing Air conditioners to keep cool for better functionality and safe from damage was mandatory.

They used to understand and process "low level programming languages", also called "Machine language".

#2. Second (2nd) Generation Computer.

The second generation computer used and utilized “Transistor” instead of enormous “Vacuum Tubes”.

Three scientists Bardeen, Brattain and Shockley, invented the transistor in 1947.

This transistor helped computer systems to be smaller, cheaper, and faster. They produce less heat and energy.

They primarily used FORTRAN and COBOL.

#3. Third (3rd) Generation Computer.

Jack Kilby developed the integrated circuit in 1958.

The third-generation computer used and utilized IC, which stands for Integrated Circuit. These IC replaced transistors and vacuum tubes as they we far more advanced.

#4. Fourth (4th) Generation Computer

The fourth generation of computer systems is equipped with a "Microprocessor". The personal computer that uses a microprocessor is called "Micro Computers".

The microprocessors are known as CPU [Central Processing Unit] or Processor. The microprocessors are considered the heart or brain of a computer.

The first commercial CPU was the Intel 4004, released in 1971 by Italian Physicist Federico Faggin.

Microprocessors are developed using Large scale Integration.

#5. Five (5th) Generation Computer               

The fifth generations of the computer system are still in the development phase. It uses and utilizes modern technology known as “Artificial Intelligence”.

They use superconductors as well as parallel processing for better and more advanced functionality.

They are multitasking and multiprogramming computers that can communicate with humans in sign languages, images, and voice commands.
